The Hitchhikers is a 1972 film written, produced, and directed by Beverly Sebastian and Ferd Sebastian.[4][5][6]

Premise[edit]

A pregnant teen is kicked out of her house and joins a band of women who lure and rob motorists.

Production[edit]

The film was made on the topic of runaways.[1] The film was made for $45,000.[2] "We know our audience," said Ferd Sebastian. "Our movies have a plot that goes A-B-C. Nothing complicated just a lot of action and a story I can understand, that you can understand and that the guy who dropped out of school in the ninth grade can get something out of."[4]

Critical[edit]

The Boston Globe called it a "stupid little movie... nothing more than a smirking skin flick".[7]

The Pittsburgh Press said "what would have been tedious as half-hour TV drama has been padded to 93 minutes."[8]

Spinning Image said "Part dreadful warning to the squares, part invitation to the hippies, this was of its time, shall we say."[9]

Box office[edit]

The film grossed nearly $3 million.[3][10] Ferd Sabstian says he made $300,000 from it.[2]
