The acting Czech foreign secretary and chair of the Czech Social Democratic Party Jan Hamáček points out on Twitter to critics that the requirement to provide protection for refugees escaping war and persecution is "not legally enforceable". Implication? Do not ask us to help.

"I want to say unambiguously that it is not true that the migration compact defines migration as a human right. Nonsense. The document does not create any such right. The migration compact only mentions migrants' human rights, ie. their human rights as human beings, as a universal principle. The compact is not an international treaty and is not legally enforceable. The compact does not limit the sovereignty of any state and its decision-making about migration. Any lawyer will tell you that."
